By Cheshire Que For 14 years now, I have witnessed high school and college students who come to my clinic struggling with disordered eating as a result of the way they perceive health and beauty. It’s heartbreaking to see them so unhappy and insecure about the way they look. To make matters worse, their health is at risk due to lack of proper nutrition, which is detrimental to optimum growth and development. So as not to confuse disordered eating with eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, let us first define what disordered eating is. Disordered eating is a wide range of irregular eating behaviors that do not warrant a diagnosis of a specific eating disorder, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Furthermore, the difference between disordered eating and eating disorder lies on whether or not an individual’s symptoms and experiences fall under the criteria defined by the American Psychiatric Association. In other words, disordered eating patterns may manifest in individuals clinically diagnosed with eating disorder, but individuals experiencing eating disorder patterns may not necessarily have an eating disorder.
