Hey, Did You Know Stephen Hawking Thought There Is No God?

In what would be somewhat of a revelation had the late theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking not been one of the world’s most famous atheists—and spoken or written on the topic on numerous occasions—media outlets are playing up that Hawking’s final book Brief Answers to the Big Questions contains the assertion that there is no God. CNN, Fox News, the Telegraph, CNET, Yahoo News, and numerous tabloid publications have all led with headlines centered around a quote from the book in which Hawking wrote, “Do I have faith? We are each free to believe what we want, and it’s my view that the simplest explanation is that there is no God… No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realisation: there is probably no heaven and afterlife either.” It’s a strong opinion, to be sure, but it is not new at all.
