Billy Kobin Louisville Courier Journal Published 8:24 AM EDT Apr 12, 2019 Thunder Over Louisville’s fireworks display rivals any show around, but the designers behind the explosive production say the 30th annual version this year will feature something that makes it bigger and better than ever. “Two words,” Ralph Piacquadio said. “More bridge.” Piacquadio, who co-designs Thunder’s fireworks show on behalf of Zambelli Fireworks, was referring to the Clark Memorial Bridge, but he didn’t want to share all of the details for the span. But crowds can expect Piacquadio and his crew to take advantage of 3,600 feet of space available on each side the Second Street bridge while lighting up the sky above the Ohio River on Saturday night. Crews with Zambelli Fireworks, based in New Castle, Pennsylvania, have been busy all week preparing fireworks on both sides of the bridge as well as on four barges. “That (amount of space) is very rare, and it’s something that, as designers, we have to take advantage of and we want to take advantage of,” Piacquadio said while standing on the bridge Thursday afternoon. “Thunder is double everything.” It takes 8,000 cues to launch all of the fireworks in about 29½ minutes, Piacquadio said.
