TALK TIME: Alone in death… what can be sadder?

The saddest stories these days are about individuals who served the people magnificently during their lifetime, and finally died alone, struck down by the vicious virus, separated in death from their loved ones. Like the brilliant and gifted Neela Satyanarayan, Maharashtra’s first and highly respected election commissioner. Like our doctors and cops. Somehow, their deaths affect us differently and are so heart wrenching. I have been talking to friends and family about our emotional response to these victims, and we all agreed we react far more intensely to the deaths of those who look after us in these dangerous times — doctors, nurses, police. Some of the recent stories leave one baffled — doctors who display mild symptoms, take every precaution, check into the hospital at the earliest, and still fail to make it. How? What happens? What leads to such a rapid deterioration? At the moment, while countries across the world are competing in a macabre race to be the ‘first’ to discover an effective vaccine, the irony isn’t lost on anyone.
