$1 million funding boost for Wairarapa suspension bridge for cyclists and walkers

A $1 million funding boost for what will be one of New Zealand’s longest suspension bridges will open up the western Wairarapa to cyclists and walkers. The Government announced on Wednesday that money for the 150-metre bridge over the Tauherenikau River north of Featherston was part of its $220 million package earmarked for nationwide cycleway projects. Tourism leaders said the bridge would be a key part of a grand plan to link all five Wairarapa towns via a western cycle trail. Destination Wairarapa general manager Anna Nielson said the bridge would bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits for the region.
