There are a lot of great bookmark-and-read-later services out there, but if you want to switch from one to another, you probably want to take your old articles with you. Here's how to import your old Instapaper or Readability articles into Pocket. Advertisement All three services—Instapaper, Readability, and Pocket—offer options to export your data, but strangely Pocket is the only service with an import function. Luckily, it's really easy to use: If you use Instapaper, just head to Instapaper's home page and click the "Export CSV" button in the right-hand sidebar. Choose the "Download HTML File" option, save it to your computer, then head to pocket.com/import/instapaper and click Browse. Choose your Instapaper HTML file, click Import, and you'll find that all of your articles appear in Pocket. It won't be able to "favorite" the articles you had favorited before, but it's still a pretty simple process. If you use Readability, you'll have to go through one extra step. … [Read more...] about How to Import Instapaper or Readability Articles Into Pocket

Obama Wrote the Most Popular Scientific Journal Article of 2016
The hottest scientific journal article of 2016 wasn’t on black holes or dinosaur-killing asteroids: it was on the Affordable Care Act, and it was penned by sitting President Barack Obama. Imagine that ever happening again. Scholarly analytics tracker Altimetric recently released its annual “top 100" list detailing the most widely-discussed scientific articles of 2016. In past years, the charts have been topped by a major scientific study on a topical subject, from radioactive contamination in freshwater fish following the Fukushima nuclear disaster (2013) to emotional contagion through social networks (2014) to the first new class of antibiotics discovered in thirty years (2015). Advertisement This year, the paper that arrested our attention the most wasn’t a traditional scientific study. It was “United States and Health Care Reform: Progress to Date and Next Steps,” an article written by President Obama and published in the highly-regarded Journal of … [Read more...] about Obama Wrote the Most Popular Scientific Journal Article of 2016

A ‘Dark Day’: Copyright Law That Threatens the Internet as We Know It Passes Final EU Vote
Amid widespread protests, online and off, the European Union approved a controversial new copyright directive on Tuesday. Two years in the making, the legislation is intended to give copyright holders more control over their work, but critics say it could hand more power to tech giants, stifle the free flow of information, and kill our beloved memes. European Parliament passed the copyright directive in a vote with 348 votes in favor, 274 against, and 36 abstentions. The new guidelines are the EU’s first major update to its copyright laws since 2001, and they’ve gone through a circuitous and confusing legislative process that only caught the public’s attention last summer. Lawmakers who opposed the directive attempted to remove the most contentious pieces of the legislation before holding a final vote on Tuesday but were overruled by just five members of Parliament. Speaker Nancy Pelosi Says Trump ‘Leaves Us No Choice But to Act’ on Impeachment
And so it begins. On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she’s asked that articles of impeachment be drafted against President I Did That Shit. Sure impeachment without removal from office is about as damaging as a public indecency charge from 1994; it’s not going to really do anything but it’s embarrassing if it comes up in a job interview. Advertisement But it’s happening and it’s a historic step that shows that the House is most likely going to vote to impeach Trump. “Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders, and a heart full of love for America, today I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment,” Pelosi said in a press conference, Politico reports. Pelosi didn’t dab, despite a dab being warranted in this case. She also didn’t provide additional details or call the president a messy bitch, “His wrongdoing strikes at the very heart of our Constitution. … [Read more...] about Speaker Nancy Pelosi Says Trump ‘Leaves Us No Choice But to Act’ on Impeachment
