President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday to revive the National Space Council, signifying a renewed (yet vague) focus on space exploration. Colonel Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, was there to witness the event. He tried to liven the room with a Buzz Lightyear quip, only to have Trump crash and burn on the landing pad. As you can see in the White House video, the exchange happens right as Trump is about to sit down to sign the executive order, which will put Vice President Mike Pence in charge of advising the president on space exploration. It’s a little hard to make out what Trump says right as he opens up the folder containing the E.O. (and the White House transcript left those words out), but it sounded like, “We know what this is, space. That’s all it has to say, space.” Then, to Aldrin, he joked, “There’s a lot of room out there, right?” Advertisement Then, this happens. Buzz Aldrin: Infinity and … [Read more...] about Buzz Aldrin’s

This Is “This Is March”: Unpacking College Basketball’s Most Uncanny Twitter Account
Jon Rothstein is a real person. He was born in a town at the very outermost edge of what could be called exurban New York City and has covered sports for a living virtually from the moment he graduated from Ithaca College. Rothstein won a Dream Job contest at New York’s ESPN sports radio station, 1050 AM, back in 2004—“he showed a lot of passion, a lot of knowledge,” the station’s program director told the New York Daily News—and in the years since he has written columns and done countless radio hits and television appearances and web videos. He has been at CBS Sports since 2010. Today, Rothstein spends a good portion of the college basketball season on CBS Sports Network, where he is energetic and informed and reliably well-dressed; people who cover college basketball games see him in the press room after the game, always in the front row, always with a thoughtful question for the coaches, and always, one veteran college basketball reporter told me, … [Read more...] about This Is “This Is March”: Unpacking College Basketball’s Most Uncanny Twitter Account

Kendall stares into the abyss in the new trailer for
HBO’s Succession is the best show you’re probably not watching. That will change hopefully, as Jesse Armstrong’s complex, timely satire is riding a wave of critical buzz as it coasts towards its second season. A teaser was released last month and now a new trailer has arrived to remind us of why we so love to hate the Roy dynasty. Jeremy Strong’s Kendall remains the focus here, as his siblings have grown wary of the new bond between he and his father, Logan (Brian Cox), that’s arisen following the high-stakes tragedy of the season one finale. Kendall, meanwhile, remains dead behind the eyes, and watching him look over the edge of a skyscraper brings with it a portent of doom. Succession returns in August. Breathtaking Simulation Recreates Neil Armstrong’s View of the Apollo 11 Landing
Choppy video taken by a camera next to Buzz Aldrin’s window is the only visual record we have of the first Moon landing. Using archival data and new high-res images, a team from NASA has recreated the Apollo 11 landing, showing Neil Armstrong’s perspective for the very first time. Thevisual record of the Apollo 11 landing is good but not great. The camera mounted near Buzz Aldrin’s right-side window captured the historic scene in 16mm time-lapse, shooting the landing at a not-so-impressive 6 frames per second (24 fps is typically required to convey the impression of uninterrupted motion). What’s more, the limited view of the Lunar Module camera meant no visual record of Neil Armstrong’s perspective of the landing was recorded. To amend this tragic limitation of history, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) team has created a computer-generated visual reconstruction of the three minutes leading up to the landing (above), showing the view … [Read more...] about Breathtaking Simulation Recreates Neil Armstrong’s View of the Apollo 11 Landing
