Few of us are eager to drive around advertising a business without commensurate compensation, but when the ad in question is as cool as the one on today’s Nice Price or Crack Pipe F100, exceptions may be made. Let’s see if this classic pickup’s price is just as exceptional. The Tesla Model 3 Killed the Rest of American Luxury
Despite the countless issues that have plagued the Tesla Model 3’s production and delivery process, Tesla did manage to sell an impressive number of them last year. And that figure, when contrasted with all the other cars sold in the U.S. last year, paints a very bleak picture of the state of American luxury car brands indeed. Yesterday, as part of Tesla’s fourth quarter and 2018 full year update call, the automaker included a statement that claimed the 3 had not only outsold all other premium sedans, but all other premium vehicles: With nearly 140,000 units sold, Model 3 was also the best-selling premium vehicle (including SUVs) in the US for 2018 – the first time in decades an American carmaker has been able to secure the top spot. “Does it shit and git?” a rally crew member from another team asked me after I rolled up to my hotel in a burbling and strikingly green 2019 Dodge Durango SRT. “What...yes? I think so,” I replied. (Full disclosure: Fiat Chrysler was kind enough to let me borrow a Durango SRT when I needed a rally support vehicle that could both shit and git with a car trailer hanging off its hitch.) The Durango SRT has been around for about two years, and the car it’s based on has been out for what feels like an eternity—around six years. Yet, somehow, it still manages to shield its occupants from the outdatedness that it truly rides upon. Well, at least in the SRT trim it does. I spent about a week and 1,300 miles in this SUV, putting it through the tests of being a city car, a race hauler, and New England road trip machine to see if this $76,450 hellraiser of a vehicle was actually worth its rather mighty price tag.
