We've seen the Toyota FT-86 for a couple of weeks, carefully dissected the delicious, metallic red sports car in any way we can, but now we've actually seen it in the flesh and Toyota's got some serious hotness here. Advertisement What's that? You can't imagine a Toyota that might consider offering a fun, affordable, two door with a modicum of sportiness and some seriously interesting style? Might we introduce you to the Toyota FT-86 concept — the first Toyota (barring the epic Lexus LFA) we've been genuinely excited about since the... um... Supra? Wow, that took entirely too long. … [Read more...] about Toyota FT-86 Concept: The AE86 Is Back In The Red, Metallic Flesh

One week out of the year, the entire car industry pulls their vacuum-sealed bag of clothes labeled “If I Ever Sell My Soul to Join a Country Club” from under the bed and descends upon Pebble Beach, ready to walk around and nod in approval of cars that, alone, are worth more money than they will amass in their lifetime. You do not need to experience such things. You do not need to see millionaires and billionaires scowling at each other on a golf course, from behind their Delahayes and Bugattis and Hispano-Suizas. You have better things to do with your time, like hoarding personal resources ahead of the apocalypse. Advertisement (The vintage racing at Laguna Seca is, however, good.) No more, says the humble Toyota Corolla, its sub-$20,000 base price a stain on the cardigans of the wealthy. We need to bring this week back to the people. Toyota announced a new special-edition 2020 Corolla Nightshade on Thursday, the day before the Bugatti Centodieci, which will also … [Read more...] about News Of The Ruling Class Out Of Pebble Beach Be Damned! According to the March 2019 fiscal year results report, Mazda is apparently developing an all-new straight-six engine with Skyactiv-X technology, joining BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar with renewed commitment to the best engine you can put in a car, and making Toyota look a little silly. In this presentation titled Fiscal Year 2019 March Results on Mazda’s investor website, page 25 details some future product plans for the company going forward, including expanding on its fantastic Kodo design language, developing a mild-hybrid system and its own electric vehicle technology, and then seemingly out of nowhere casually lists a Skyactiv-X straight-six, as well as a Skyactiv-D straight-six diesel. Advertisement As far as I can tell, Mazda hasn’t mentioned this in last year’s fiscal year report, nor when we drove the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-X prototype, nor at either of the two US Mazda 3 launch events, so it’s news to us. The straight-six engine is on a bit of a comeback, … [Read more...] about Mazda Challenges BMW and Mercedes, Shames Toyota With Development of New Straight-Six Skyactiv-X Engine
There was some grumbling over the choices in our last Choose Your Eternity challenge (which was won by the '77 Levis Edition AMC Hornet AMX by a healthy margin), ostensibly because they were too easy… but we know the real reason: being reminded of the Malaise Era brings up the uncomfortable parallels between the hard economic times then and those now. Of course, there are differences; sure, the current war is more expensive- in dollar terms- than was Vietnam, but inflation isn't the raging beast it was back then (though the bill for our 15-year debt binge looks to be just as painful as 20% inflation was). What we need is a flashback to Morning In America! The 80s, when the Evil Empire was crumbling and Toyota still built cars that didn't hit you like a triple Valium with cough syrup chaser; yes, it's Corolla Time!there? Send those guys to Europe for a crash course in complexity, then to Detroit for some lessons in bean-counter-driven corner-cutting! But it's still possible to get … [Read more...] about Project Car Hell, Screamin’ Corolla Edition: AE86 or FX16?
Today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe AE86 is proof positive that the Toyota Corolla hasn't always been as dull as a kiss from your sister, but will this one's price dull your ardor? Let's break down yesterday's Canadian Locost by the numbers - 5.0 engine; about 1,850 lbs, providing something like 8 lbs per pony to drag around; a historic wireframe 7 in its iconic nose; and thirteen five, which was its price tag. What does that all add up to? A 63% Nice Price win, that's what. Advertisement Okay, that's enough maths, let's queue up today's contender. In the nineteen eighties Toyota transitioned the entire Corolla lineup from rear-wheel drive to front drivers after first testing the waters with cars like the Starlet and Tercel. This switch pretty much plunged Toyota's small car into a cold dark winter of performance purgatory in which it still is mired. But before Toyota snipped the Corolla's cojones they built what are arguably today the most desirable of that model's iterations - … [Read more...] about For $13,500, Is This Corolla A Trueno Romance?
