The Ford Explorer emerged mewling and blinking sometime during the Cretaceous period. The year was 1990. Pterodactyls dominated the skies above great lumbering beasts, their huge wings blotting out the sun. And from its ancestral birthing ponds of the Louisville Assembly Plant the Explorer clung forth to the silted banks, crawling forward in low gear, dragging its heavy truck frame through the sand, its Eddie Bauer plumage resplendent in anticipation of mating rituals. (Full Disclosure: Ford brought me to Oregon to test drive the Explorer, and eat and stay on the company’s dime.) What Is It? The 2020 Ford Explorer puts this model This will a boon to enthusiasts, who will now have a 400-horsepower Explorer ST to play with if they so desire. This new styling is contemporary: a leering, tapered grille and a downward cant to its roofline, a deceptive touch that makes the whole thing look rakish—a word never heretofore applied to an Explorer. Ford hit the U.S. Patent and Trademark offices earlier this month and the names it trademarked sound like some fun trucks are just waiting to happen. Patent applications 88519133 for the name ‘Adrenaline’ and 88519474 for the name ‘Badlands’ are both described as names for “Land motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles.” Pretty vague, but Ford Authority has two good guesses what these names might mean. Advertisement For starters, the name Adrenaline already has a history at Ford. Adrenalin (same name, but without the ‘e.’) was going to be a performance package for the Explorer Sport Trac pick-up. The package would have fitted the Explorer-based truck with a supercharged version of Ford’s 4.6-liter Instead, the Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin ended up as a watered-down styling package thanks to the dream killing Great Recession, according to The Badlands name, on the other hand, … [Read more...] about Ford’s Trademark Applications for ‘Badlands’ and ‘Adrenaline’ Could Mean New Truck Packages in the Future

What sets it apart from other dramas, though, is that it does not routinely wend toward a happy ending. And when it doesn’t, there aren’t any closing credits to disjoin the depressing resolution from the rest of your life. That’s why movies about politics are infinitely less stressful than the real thing. In this episode of NPR’s Cinema Junkie, Beth Accomando talks to Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz about some of the timeless films he’s curated for the channel’s political film festival—such as … [Read more...] about Mel Gibson makes his podcast debut on

The actor: Morena Baccarin has a knack—and a look—for playing otherworldly characters, whether she’s leading an invasion on Earth or a regime in some far-flung corner of the Milky Way. She’s also been the voice of The Flash’s A.I. and one of DC Comics’ most notorious assassins. Baccarin shines just as powerfully in more down-to-Earth roles, including her Emmy-nominated turn as Jessica Brody on Homeland. But even with all of her zipping back and forth between comic-book universes, including a seasons-long arc on Gotham, Baccarin is probably still best known for her work as the regal but warm Inara Serra on Firefly. So when The A.V. Club had a chance to speak with Baccarin, we of course asked her about one of the most ardent fandoms in the ’verse, her forays into zealotry on TV, and being a newly minted romantic comedy lead. Ode To Joy (2019)–“Francesca” The A.V. Club: Romantic comedy is a genre you haven’t explored that … [Read more...] about Morena Baccarin on what
