The Climate and Energy Stories We’ll Be Following in 2017
On the climate and energy front, 2016 was a year of contradictions. Again and again, our planet smashed global temperature records. The fingerprints of climate change were visible in extreme weather from the North Pole to Louisiana. But the clean energy sector also hit some major milestones. Wind and solar power expanded rapidly as costs fell, demonstrating that a high-tech, low-carbon future is within reach. As Donald Trump and his phalanx of science deniers prepare to take office, the world prepares to press on with climate action in spite of this new reality. Between incredible technological progress and enormous environments threats, the tension we saw in 2016 is likely to grow. Here are the energy and climate stories we’ll be following closely next year. Advertisement The Fate of the Paris Climate Accord November 4th marked a historic milestone for global climate action, when the Paris accord entered legal force. A young woman heroically disobeys her parents in the first teaser for
We’ve seen dozens of teasers for live-action remakes of animated Disney films in the last few years, and most of them seem to be designed simply to remind viewers of the old cartoons they like—whether it’s with specific musical cues, familiar-looking locations and characters, or both. Weirdly, this teaser for the new take on Mulan takes a different approach, acting as if it’s for an entirely new movie and not a re-telling of a story that Disney fans already know. The story beats that it teases are familiar, but there’s no talking dragon, no helpful cricket, and no overt nod to “Make A Man Out Of You.” (Back in 2017, it was suggested that the movie might not have songs at all.) It also happens to be a pretty good teaser, cleverly pairing voiceover of the importance of a woman being quiet and graceful and disciplined with shots of Hua Mulan herself (Liu Yifei) using those qualities to kick ass as a soldier. (Speaking of, she doesn’t seem … [Read more...] about A young woman heroically disobeys her parents in the first teaser for
The Foulest Alcoholic Concoctions
It’s the start of the new year, and it’s time for change. Time to look our biggest mistakes in the face, and to make a promise to ourselves that we’ll never do it again. And as my first race of 2019—the famous 24 Hours of Daytona, at which I will be camping—approaches, this seemed like an ideal opportunity to look back on all those horrible, horrible things I’ve put into my body for the sake of “a good time.” This list is half a condemnation of my own terrible decisions and half a warning: Advertisement This Could Be YOU At Races. 10. IPA Beermosas Where: Road America When: June 2017, IndyCar Why: Mimosas have been a race weekend tradition in the group of gals I attend races with ever since we snuck a bottle of champagne into the Red Bull Ring in 2015. Since then, we’ve always made it our mission to consume What I Regretted Most: Topping a bratwurst omelet breakfast with one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever drank, … [Read more...] about The Foulest Alcoholic Concoctions
How to Reuse and Recycle Your Amazon Boxes
This week, the Verge reported on the massive onslaught of Amazon’s cardboard boxes at recycling facilities everywhere—otherwise known as the “Amazon effect.” According to Sims Municipal Recycling, one of the country’s largest recycling facilities that accepts much of New York City’s recyclables, corrugated cardboard—the kind that makes up Amazon boxes—now represents nearly half of the local curbside recycling stream, as compared to just 15 percent in 2004. Advertisement And while this uptick may not be isolated to Amazon packages alone, the retailer certainly hasn’t helped the issue with the launch of its two-day and even more recent one-day shipping guarantees for Prime customers. (Back in 2017, Amazon said it shipped more than five billion items to its Prime users, which obviously doesn’t even factor in the number of shipments to non-Prime customers.) With China’s ongoing ban on the import of our recyclable … [Read more...] about How to Reuse and Recycle Your Amazon Boxes
