How to Choose Between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu

There’s more than one Ubuntu. You can download Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu: But what’s the difference, and which should you choose? The answer depends on what you’re looking for: Linux is all about choice. What’s the Difference? To pick properly, you’ll need to understand the strengths of each “flavor.” That might be the bling and polish of Kubuntu, the “set it up and forget about it” of Ubuntu, the retro simplicity and stability of Xubuntu, or the ability of Lubuntu to run on older and less powerful hardware. Despite the different names, all of these are based on the same underlying Ubuntu software. They include the same Linux kernel and low-level system utilities. However, each has different desktop and flavor-specific applications. That means that some are more full-featured, while others are more lightweight—so each feels a little different. Since these flavors are built to make Linux more accessible, they’re not necessarily going to score upvotes in a geeky … [Read more...] about How to Choose Between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu

How to Create Random (Fake) Datasets in Microsoft Excel

Creating random data to fill an Excel workbook is as simple as adding a few little-known formulas. These formulas come in handy when honing your Microsoft Excel skills, as they give you fake data to practice with before you risk mistakes with the real thing. Use the Formula Bar To start, we’ll enter one of a few formulas in the Formula bar. This is the window below the ribbon, found here. From there, it’s about adding the data you want and then doing a little cleanup. Adding Random Numbers To add an integer at random, we’ll use the “RANDBETWEEN” function. Here, we can specify a range of random numerals, in this case, a number from one to 1,000, then copy it to each cell in the column below it. Click to select the first cell where you’d like to add your random number. Copy the following formula and paste it into Excel’s Formula bar. You can change the number inside the parenthesis to fit your needs. This formula picks a random number between one and 1,000. … [Read more...] about How to Create Random (Fake) Datasets in Microsoft Excel

How to Make Sortable Headings in Excel

Microsoft Excel becomes a powerhouse once you get into its expansive list of sorting options. Here we’ll cover its most straightforward option for sorting, a simple option that enables us to reorder data in specific columns. In your spreadsheet, highlight the row with the headings you want to sort. If you don’t want to sort all of the data, you can also just select those cells you need by highlighting them, or by holding Ctrl and clicking to choose multiple unconnected cells. From the top of the page, click “Data” to switch tabs. Locate “Sort & Filter,” then click the “Filter” icon. This will add a small down arrow to the right of each heading. Click the arrow next to “Total $” and sort by largest to smallest or smallest to largest by clicking the appropriate option in the dropdown. This option works for any number, so we can also use it for the “Sales” and “Product ID” sections. Words, on the other hand, are sorted differently. We can sort these … [Read more...] about How to Make Sortable Headings in Excel
