Amazon to surpass Walmart as top U.S. apparel retailer with $30B in annual sales, analyst says

Amazon is becoming a go-to clothing destination for U.S. shoppers. A Wells Fargo analyst expects Amazon’s gross apparel and footwear sales to top $30 billion this year, CNBC reported, which would help the tech giant surpass Walmart as the top clothing retailer in the U.S. Amazon has invested heavily in its fashion arm over the past several years. The company sells several of its own private label apparel brands and is filing trademarks for more. It also rolled out recent initiatives such as the Amazon Echo Look and its Stitch Fix competitor Prime Wardrobe. Amazon has also become the go-to shoe retailer for young men. Quartz on Monday cited a new Goldman Sachs research note that shows Amazon overtaking Nike this year as the “preferred shoe retailer of young men.” Goldman Sachs analysts also reported Amazon as a top destination for athletic apparel, underwear, and grooming items for U.S. males ages 13-to-34. These trends are likely one reason why … [Read more...] about Amazon to surpass Walmart as top U.S. apparel retailer with $30B in annual sales, analyst says

Healthcare industry spends $30B on marketing—most of it goes to doctors

Talk with your doctor… It’s a common refrain at the end of any drug advertisement or disease awareness campaign. Ostensibly, it seems like a responsible suggestion. Talking with your own, trusted doctor can help determine if a new drug really is right for you, or if you may be suffering from an undiagnosed disease. You shouldn’t just take the word of the drug company behind that drug ad or awareness campaign, of course. But the suggestion to consult with your doctor may not be as innocent as it seems. The drug company likely got to your doctor first. Of the nearly $30 billion health companies now spend on medical marketing each year, around 68 percent (or about $20 billion) goes to persuading doctors and other medical professionals—not consumers—of the benefits of prescription drugs. That’s according to an in-depth analysis published in JAMA this week. The study broke down exactly how health companies convinced us to spend enormous sums on our care … [Read more...] about Healthcare industry spends $30B on marketing—most of it goes to doctors

The nutrition study the $30B supplement industry doesn’t want you to see

A decade-long observational study of more than 30,000 people finds that certain vitamins and minerals may help extend your life and keep you from dying of cardiovascular disease—but only if you get those beneficial nutrients from foods, not supplements. Further ReadingSupplements are a $30 billion racket—here’s what experts actually recommendThe study, published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine, is yet another to find that taking supplemental vitamins and minerals—either individually or in multivitamins—offers no discernible benefits in terms of reducing risks of death generally or death from cardiovascular disease and cancers, specifically. Simply put, popping pills can’t take the place of eating a healthy diet—an unflashy takeaway that likely won’t please the massive, $30 billion supplement industry. Moreover, the study didn’t just find a lack of benefits from supplements. It also found potential harms. Getting high … [Read more...] about The nutrition study the $30B supplement industry doesn’t want you to see

Huawei says US ban will cost it $30B in lost revenue

Following a string of trade restrictions from the U.S., China’s telecoms equipment and smartphone maker Huawei expects its revenues to drop $30 billion below forecast over the next two years, founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei said Monday during a panel discussion at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters. Huawei’s production will slow down in the next two years while revenues will hover around $100 billion this and next year, according to the executive. The firm’s overseas smartphone shipment is tipped to drop 40%, he said, confirming an earlier report from Bloomberg. That said, Ren assured that Huawei’s output will be “rejuvenated” by the year 2021 after a period of adjustment. Huawei’s challenges are multifaceted as the U.S. “entity list” bars it from procuring from American chip makers and using certain Android services among a list of other restrictions. In response, the Chinese behemoth recently announced it has been … [Read more...] about Huawei says US ban will cost it $30B in lost revenue

Disclaimer: Weather is a mix of pattern and chaos; these ideas are from the patterned world. JUNE REVIEW Sea Surface temperature anomalies as at end of April may be seen at http://www.weatherzone.com.au/climate/indicator_sst.jsp?lt=global&lc=global&c=ssta The main pattern changes are a return to near normal across the central and south Pacific, but still slightly warmer than normal around NZ and Tasman Sea. Similar easing of warm anomalies are occurring in Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. A zone of cool is now established west of Australia (part of a Positive Indian dipole, depriving Australia of rain from the west). The med is hot. And both the Southern Ocean and the Arctic have lots of cool melt water. To see how the annual weather cycle and the seasons are working out, we can check … [Read more...] about Bob Blog 30 June 2019
