We have to admit that Voisin was only an automotive name that hung somewhere in the back of our mind, along with Buick and Lincoln until we got to Pebble this year. A long-past-gone luxury marque with an illustrious history that ended long before we were born. That said, even the most incredible Lincolns and Buicks have nothing on the insane vehicles Gabriel Voisin came up with during the first half of the century. If Saab can claim to be born from jets, Voisin automobiles were directly birthed from the loins of the glorious age of early propeller aviation. If looks could stun, these cars' phasers are set on "kill." And the switch is stuck there. Donald Trump’s inauguration could have a retro soundtrack courtesy of The Beach Boys. The band has been approached about taking on the gig, and has not yet said no, though that option is still on the table. In a statement provided to The A.V. Club, a spokesperson said: “The Beach Boys have been asked to perform as part of the inauguration festivities. But no decision has been made at this point as to how or whether they will participate. We will let you know as soon as a decision is final.” Well, that’s not a flat out no, making the group an outlier among some other big name acts. It’s worth noting that the current Beach Boys touring lineup is headed up by Mike Love and does not include Brian Wilson. (You’ll remember, back in 2012 Love denied that he kicked Wilson out of the group after it definitely seemed like he did.) Love also hinted he’d be up for the Trump inauguration earlier this year. As Spin notes, he told The New York Post in … [Read more...] about The Beach Boys are mulling a request to play Trump’s inauguration
One week out of the year, the entire car industry pulls their vacuum-sealed bag of clothes labeled “If I Ever Sell My Soul to Join a Country Club” from under the bed and descends upon Pebble Beach, ready to walk around and nod in approval of cars that, alone, are worth more money than they will amass in their lifetime. You do not need to experience such things. You do not need to see millionaires and billionaires scowling at each other on a golf course, from behind their Delahayes and Bugattis and Hispano-Suizas. You have better things to do with your time, like hoarding personal resources ahead of the apocalypse. Advertisement (The vintage racing at Laguna Seca is, however, good.) No more, says the humble Toyota Corolla, its sub-$20,000 base price a stain on the cardigans of the wealthy. We need to bring this week back to the people. Toyota announced a new special-edition 2020 Corolla Nightshade on Thursday, the day before the Bugatti Centodieci, which will also … [Read more...] about News Of The Ruling Class Out Of Pebble Beach Be Damned! The $8,878,800 (plus tax!) list price of the Bugatti Centodieci really makes you think. The fact that there’s a market for such a preposterous toy is a pretty clear indicator that some people are too rich. Then again–why would you park among peasants in one of these when I could hook you up with an F-16 jet for less? Advertisement But actually–I was trawling Facebook thinking about Bugattis mere moments ago when I saw this listing for a 1980 F-16 jet for sale in Palm Beach, Florida with an asking price of $8,500,000. (Call Russ if you want it, but I bet he knows what he’s got.) “One is from the future and looks like it’s from the ’80s,” my colleague Raphael Orlove observed. And “the other is from the ’80s and looks like the future.” Indeed, the Centodieci is an homage to the Bugatti EB110, borrowing some of its design elements and ostensibly supposed to be just as epic. The airplane ad is hilariously vague, but I … [Read more...] about Why Buy A Bugatti Centodieci When You Can Have This F-16 Fighter Jet For Less?
A Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, a car which makes a McLaren F1 seems like a Honda Accord, is going up for auction at Pebble Beach. Now may be a good time, if you’re interested in dishing out what’s projected to be over $4 million, to talk about that time it caught fire during the shooting of Top Gear. Advertisement Former Top Gear host and former-current Fifth Gear host, as well as driving and racing legend, etc. etc. Tiff Needell chimed in on Twitter earlier today to let everybody know that, no matter their childhood fantasies, the road-going version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR was... not really great off of the track, and full of surprises: Trusting his natural journalist instincts, Jalopnik Features Editor Raphael Orlove was quick to follow up with Tiff about the whole car “burst into flames” point, as one can’t simply let that sit on the timeline unexplained: Advertisement Tiff’s casual shrugging off of the CLK GTR trying to kill him in traffic … [Read more...] about That Time a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Caught Fire During the Filming of Top Gear
