It doesn’t feel like 2019 should be the year of fried food. Aspirational “wellness” goals rule everything around us, encouraging us to ditch booze, sugar, sugary booze, and any breakfast that doesn’t include chia seeds. Paradoxically, air fryers have over the past two years become the sought-after small kitchen appliance, often mentioned in the same reverent tone as Instant Pots. Dig deeper, though, and it’s clear air fryers aren’t antithetical to our dietary efforts—they guarantee the best of all possible worlds. “They’re really promising you the moon,” says Kimberly Janeway, a multimedia content creator with Consumer Reports, which has tested roughly two dozen air fryer models. “The whole allure is the promise that they deliver the delicious crunchy taste of fried food using little or no oil. Some of the claims are—I’m looking at some now—‘great taste with 75% less fat,’ ‘crispy … [Read more...] about Do air fryers deserve the hype?

I’ve never loved the AirPods. That’s mainly because I’m one of the few people whose ears just don’t fit with the mostly universal design. But they wouldn’t be so popular if they weren’t great earbuds. So when Apple announced the AirPods Pro with different fit options and a flurry of new features, I thought it must be time for me to be a fanatic. I’ve been using them for a week, and I love them. I also don’t think they’re for everyone. The AirPods Pro look immediately familiar and yet uncanny at the same time. The iconic white-earbud-on-a-stem design is still there, but it’s also compressed into a tighter package, one that includes a silicone tip on the end of the earbud. This tip is what was missing on the AirPods, although I realize not everyone loves a super tight seal when wearing earbuds. Apple actually says that “with vents helping equalize pressure” the AirPod Pros aren’t supposed to be airtight at … [Read more...] about Allow Me to Criticize the AirPods Pro, Which I Love

Sony has been trying to crack a tough nut for the past couple of years. The company wants to translate the tremendous success it’s had making over-ear noise-canceling headphones and shrink the technology down to something you can put in your pocket. The new $230 WF-1000XM3 represent its latest attempt at miniaturizing its excellent noise-canceling technology. They also represent some impressive progress, and the result is a terrific set of earbuds unlike anything else on the market. The first thing I noticed about the 1000XM3 truly wireless earbuds is that they’re not that small. The charging case is almost the size of a pack of cigarettes, and the earbuds look like high-tech mutant hunks of caramel corn. That analogy might only make sense to me, but suffice it say that these things are not as small or as sleek as AirPods. I should also point out that the WF-1000XM3 earbuds are in the same product family as the Sony WH-1000XM3 over-ear headphones, and even borrow some … [Read more...] about Sony’s New Wireless Earbuds Put Amazing Noise Canceling in Your Pocket
If you’d asked me three years ago which wireless earbuds to buy for the gym, I would’ve laughed and laughed and laughed. The entire category was so hilariously bad back then, how could I recommend anything? Well let me tell you friend: a lot has changed in the best of ways. Historically, the problem with wireless earbuds hasn’t been sound quality. It’s been comfort and convenience. The truly minimal wireless earbuds tend to fall off your head or feel like you’re wearing heavy stones in your ear canals. Other styles required a clunky neckband that improved comfort and battery life but also made you look like a goon. Don’t even get me started on easy-to-lose proprietary chargers. Advertisement All together, these problems made wireless earbuds virtually useless for an active lifestyle—and it’s still a challenge. But after testing out some of the best reviewed wireless earbuds on the market right now, I was thrilled to learn that some of … [Read more...] about The Very Best Wireless Earbuds for Active People
