The Alfa Romeo Junior Z Was A Kammback Kid

There won’t be any deliberation. There won’t be any disagreement. Zagato has always known what to do with Alfa Romeos. And what they did with the Junior back in 1969 is no exception. But how did Zagato get their hands on an already gorgeous Alfa Romeo design? Car designer and friend of Jalopnik Matteo Licata has the story. We’ve heard from Matteo before. A few weeks ago, I shared his video giving the backstory of the Maserati Biturbo, the boxy coupe and sedan duo that ushered in the multi-spool era and saved the brand. This week, he’s got some history from another Italian automaker, this time with a design house in tow as well. Now, the standard Alfa Romeo Junior was far from ugly. Giorgetto Giugiaro (then at Bertone) put a body on it for the ages when the car came out in 1963 and the car took off. By 1967, the Alfa management was so satisfied with the original shape’s success that they decided to turn to the team across town at Zagato to see what more … [Read more...] about The Alfa Romeo Junior Z Was A Kammback Kid

TVR Sagaris: The Battle Axe of Blackpool

TVR may be gone but not forgotten, and they also had the decency to go out with a bang: a violent, loud, and downright insane car called the Sagaris. Advertisement The sagaris was a Scythian battle axe which later became the weapon of choice of the Persians. It was popular at the time mainly because it could easily penetrate the enemy’s armor. Its design was similar to modern ice axes. The TVR Sagaris is well worthy of its name. The last TVR from the genius Peter Wheeler’s era, this 4 liter, 380 horsepower fiberglass monster is, well, my favourite car. The thing about TVR’s is that they are unique. They make an unmistakeable noise with their insane motorbike-style exhausts. If you are waiting in a bus stop in the UK, and suddenly see and most probably also hear a fast-moving object in the distance with an equally loud and proud paintjob, Advertisement you know it’s gonna be a TVR. And you’re happy, because what TVRs do the best is cheer people … [Read more...] about TVR Sagaris: The Battle Axe of Blackpool

Mustang At Cars & Coffee Shows How You Do Not Drive At Cars & Coffee

Cars & Coffee meetups have become a sacred ritual of weekend mornings across the USA, where people come to gather and bask in the mutual glow of the love of the automobile. But drivers like the one at the wheel of this Mustang at the Cars & Coffee meet in Charlotte, North Carolina, are just setting us back. Seth, the reader who sent this in, knows just how bad this sort of thing is: Yesterday at the cars and coffee meet in Charlotte NC a mustang 5.0 crashed into a fire hydrant trying to do a burnout as he left. They are talking about shutting the event down because of this crap that people do everytime they leave, even though they tell them not to. Luckily no one was standing there as he went over the curb and up the hill to hit the hydrant. People need to know that this is not ok. There was a cop around, watching people leaving but he was busy giving a ticket to someone else. there was also a M3 with a 2jz swap doing doughnuts prior to this and many people to burnouts. … [Read more...] about Mustang At Cars & Coffee Shows How You Do Not Drive At Cars & Coffee

The Idiotic Day G.I. Joe and Cobra Took Their Fight From the Battlefield to the Football Field

We all agree that, no matter where you stand politically, it’s a good thing to “support the troops.” But what if, instead of defending our freedom, the troops were playing football games with terrorists? That’s the question posed by one particular episode of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, titled “Pigskin Commandos.” The answer to that question happens to be “They’d be assholes and you’d hate them” — although that doesn’t begin to describe the inanity and insanity of what happens when the Joes face Cobra on the field. Are you ready for some (insanely dumb) football? [jump] Our story begins, like all the best stories do, with Sgt. Slaughter watching TV with an unconscious woman. This unconscious woman is Sgt. Slaughter’s sister, and not some random girl he’s roofie’d (unless Sgt. Slaughter has a weird sister fetish I’m unaware of); it’s worth noting that she looks like ‘80s-era … [Read more...] about The Idiotic Day G.I. Alex Mills, Who Helped

It almost seems hard to believe today, but there was a time when Top Gear wasn’t an international phenomenon and massive franchise—and instead was just a little car-review show on the BBC. It was the internet that helped Top Gear break global barriers, and Alex Mills played a massive part in that. Mills, known to many by his internet handle of Viper007Bond, died this week of leukemia at 34. Tributes and salutes from across the network of car enthusiasts he helped cultivate poured in, including from Top Gear’s former hosts. Advertisement Mills, who ran the Top Gear fan site FinalGear.com and helped drive much of the show’s popularity and recognition outside of the U.K., died this past Wednesday, nine days after he wrote a blog entry titled “Leukemia Has Won.” In that entry, Mills said that despite his best efforts “over the past two and a half years” with leukemia, his liver had become too damaged to continue treatment, and that … [Read more...] about Alex Mills, Who Helped
