Nope: John Mayer, “I Guess I Just Feel Like” – John Mayer sighs a heavy sigh at his breakfast table, dropping his copy of the New York Times Sunday edition into his lap. His orange juice sits before him. His bowl of Wheaties barely touched. It’s another day of terrible headlines as the global world order begins to shift, none of us totally sure where it will land. Mayer sighs again. “I guess I just feel like,” he begins to say, out loud, to his black Labrador Moose. But then Mayer loses his train of thought. It comes back. “I guess I just feel like...” he tries again, playing with the emphasis. The complete thought emerges. “I guess I just feel like... nobody’s honest.” Moose yawns. Mayer looks up out of a window and makes a note to himself. “Yeah,” he says. And that’s how I imagine this horrible song came to be. “That’s good.” Mayer puts his copy of the paper off to the side, and … [Read more...] about John Mayer Bores Us, Jason Derulo Tortures Us, and Lauren Jauregui

Lauren Groff’s
Lauren Groff opens her latest short story collection with a woman walking through her North Florida neighborhood, looking through her neighbors’ windows, getting brief glimpses of their lives. “Ghosts And Empties” is less a story and more an explanation of Groff’s methodology. While her first collection, Delicate Edible Birds, was filled with narratives that spanned decades and showed characters growing up, falling in love, and making defining friendships, Florida is a series of more focused vignettes, with many stories spanning just a single night or weekend, leaving the rest of what happens to the reader’s imagination. Advertisement It’s a testimony to Groff’s artistry that these stories can be at once satisfying while tantalizingly incomplete. The fascination with myth and fables that drove Groff’s bestselling novel Fates And Furies also weaves its way through Florida with tales like “Eyewall,” in which a woman … [Read more...] about Lauren Groff’s
Lauren Salzman Says Being a NXIVM ‘Slave’ Was ‘The Most Painful Thing I Have Ever Experienced’
The NXIVM trial has now entered its third week, and, as expected, the specifics of the cult run by leader Keith Raniere have become progressively harrowing. On Monday, Lauren Salzman—daughter of NXIVM President Nancy Salzman and high-ranking member of the cult wing DOS (her official title was “first-line master,” or “Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions”)—stood trial and testified against Raniere. In the process, her first-hand account of the abuses she faced, and those faced by other “slaves” in the cult, became more apparent. Lauren Salzman, as you may recall, pleaded guilty to charges of racketeering conspiracy last month, when she also admitted to enslaving a woman for two years. Advertisement According to the New York Times, Salzman addressed the courtroom on Monday by describing the NXIVM branding practice developed by Smallville actor Allison Mack that served as an initiation process for women to join DOS. Gilmore Girls’
The 2016 Television Critics Association summer press tour began with an impressive showing from Netflix, which came to Los Angeles to promote The Crown, The Get Down, Luke Cage, and Stranger Things. But the TV press was far more excited about a presentation for a show that debuted back when Netflix was just a DVD-delivery service: Gilmore Girls. During its seven-season run on The WB and The CW, the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore inspired legions of fans with its rapid-fire dialogue (scripts were reportedly twice as long as usual hour-long shows), quirky small-town charm, and the fraught family drama that piled on top of all the wisecracks. After a nearly nine-year absence, Gilmore Girls is returning to screens on Friday, November 25, in the form of a four-part miniseries, Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life. The revival has been the subject of much reporting and speculation, from the confirmation of returning characters to analysis of the official trailer. The TCA panel—which … [Read more...] about Gilmore Girls’
